Eat, Gamble or Shop Till You Drop

Forget to pack that important item? No worries! Ten minutes south of Lock 30 in the East Liverpool/Calcutta area, you’ll find a shopper’s paradise with a Super WalMart, K-mart, Big Lots, Dollar Store and various grocery/department stores and seasonal farm markets. Restaurants will suit every palate, from fast food to fine dining, including local’s favorites: the Hot Dog Shoppe, Bruno’s Pizza, Bruster’s Ice Cream, Adrian’s, Maxi’s Lunchbox, Bob Evans, Hoag's Family Restaurant, Taco Bell and many more, including the familiar Dairy Queen. Combine fine dining with a glimpse of historic preservation at the artfully restored Spread Eagle Tavern in nearby Hanoverton. This gourmet restaurant features 7 intimate dining rooms and a unique rathskeller in a Federal style 1837 mansion.

Downtown East Liverpool boasts the Museum of Ceramics and a handful of stores, www.elchamber.com which feature the ceramic and pottery products that put East Liverpool on the map. Don’t forget the Lou Holtz Hall of Fame and Museum, Thompson House Mansion, Ohio River Arts Gallery, and the popular Broadway Wharf (on the Ohio River), where live entertainment and boat-watching reign. All are less than a 15 minute drive from Lock 30.

Drive ten minutes farther across the river to West Virginia, and tour Homer Laughlin Pottery Factory (tours by reservation), complete with Fiestaware available for purchase at the outlet. Or, chance your luck at The Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort, an 80,000 square foot casino with 3,000 slots and eight restaurants, featuring thoroughbred racing. Both are located just 20 minutes from Lock 30 and provide the perfect getaway should you get caught camping on a less-than-perfect-weather day.
